We will consider their application to the Yoga of Devotion, Knowledge, and Karma, as we imbibe from the Gita's wisdom and express its essence in asanas as well. The Yoga SutrasThe Yoga Sutras by Patanjali have been both appreciated and underrated within the Yoga community. They have been primarily presented from a male perspective, even though the flowering of yoga is often due to many dedicated yoginis. Using Nischala Joy Devi's The Secret Power of Yoga: A Woman's Guide to the Heart and Spirit of the Yoga Sutras, and Alberto Villoldo's Yoga Power, and Spirit: Patanjali the Shaman, we will explore and experience this ancient gem from a feminine perspective, imbibing from the font of the Sutra's timeless wisdom. See what suggestions this text offers for our practice. Men are welcome as well!Yoga, Emotions and Transformations in ConsciousnessSthira sukham asanam: posture is steady and openly relaxed. PYS, II-46In teaching posture, yoga classes usually place a lot of emphasis on the body (alignment) and mind (focusing, awareness), but rarely do we delve into the sometimes murky realm of emotions and how they affect our fundamental relationships to the world. Join us to learn how we can use posture to explore the dynamics of our emotions and the underlying energies of the autonomic nervous system that support them and discover how integral they are in maintaining a healthy self sense. By learning how the cultivation of sthira and sukham takes us into a much deeper level of integration of the nervous system than just the physical anatomy, and how this requires an ongoing relationship with the world around us, we can transform our yoga/meditation practice and life. Yoga for Special PopulationsLearn to work with special populations within your classes or as separate workshops you can offer.Exploring the Chakras: A Basic Chakra WeekendLearn about the underlying energy currents that feed the chakras, what causes blockages, how to use the chakra system for diagnosis and treatment of energetic imbalances, and much more that make the chakras intelligible and useful as a map for life's journey to consciousness.Pranayama YogaAs a teacher, just knowing how to practice Pranayama doesn't necessarily make it easy to teach it. In this experiential workshop, you'll learn to teach various Pranayama techniques including ujjayi, nadi shodhana and more.Experience SanskritExperience Sanskrit is more like a series of party games than a class at your local college or job-related training. We'll be playfully and enjoyably participating in activities that provide you with VIVID EXPERIENCES. These experiences make the Sanskrit names of the poses more memorable than any book you can ever read. Here's what you get when you participate in Experience Sanskrit:
Opening the Heart: A Meditation WorkshopThe heart connects our personal self to our awakened soul. Meditation in the heart is all about connection--to our own love, to others, to the integration of masculine and feminine. Heart-centered meditation can shift everything in our lives: our relationships, our sense of self, our ability to access wisdom.Guided by awakened heart teacher, Sally Kempton, this four-hour workshop unfolds a method for relaxing into the heart in meditation, and offers powerful practices for releasing some of the core emotional obstacles that block the heart. In this workshop you'll learn:
Karma and TransformationIn the eastern traditions, it's said that karma is the most powerful force in our lives. Our pleasure and pain, our character, the way our mind works, and even our ability to practice yoga are said to be the results of karma. Yet, contrary to popular lore, karma is never fixed. Our karmas are fluid, and the more we understand how to work with the force of karma, the more we are able to turn difficult situations into blessings. This workshop brings to life the yogic teachings on karma, exploding myths, and showing you how to chart the workings of karma in your life and the lives of others. It will help you see the distinction between the karma you're born with and the karma you create. We'll explore practices for transforming karmic difficulties, the nature of karmic agreements, and how yoga and meditation interact with karma. This workshop is designed to give you powerful insight into your life's journey, along with meditations, self-inquiry practices, and other tools for transformation. Among the topics we'll explore:
UpanishadsThe Mandukya Upanishad consisting of only 12 verses is the shortest Upanishad and is considered the crown jewel of Vedanta. The deepest understanding of this philosophy behind the sacred word "AUM" leads to the ultimate goal of Yogic practice: Moksha or Enlightenment. We will take you on a journey to understand Vedanta and more importantly apply this philosophy practically to daily life. Yoga is everywhere and not just within the studio. Perfection is in the journey itself and gradually it leads to a state of being Happy for no reason at all - a certain lightness of being to handle the ups & downs of our day-to-day lives (without drugs!).Jyothi will focus on the practice of devotion where you experience the bliss of glorifying the divine within you. In Kaliyuga (this age of darkness), the easiest and the most effective way to attain Moksha is to sing or chant the names of your favorite deity or deities. This workshop will cover Philosophy, Meditation and explore chanting as a way to Self Realization. Energy AnatomyThis is a revolutionary re-vision of musculo-skeletal anatomy in terms of functionally connected lines of myofascia. The workshop gives a new perspective and a new way to view holistic anatomy, posture and movement. This workshop will improve posture, yoga asana and increase awareness to the overall movement of the body.Therapeutics 1Feet, Shins, Ankles, & Knees: Setting the FoundationTherapeutics 2Thighs, Pelvis, & Midback - Freeing Back and Hip PainTherapeutics 3Shoulders, Arms, & Wrists - Instruments of the HeartTherapeutics 4Shoulders, neck, head, special conditions including women's health and wellness, PMS, menopause, MS, heart disease, Parkinson's DiseaseIntro to MeditationMindfulness meditation. Ayurveda, the "knowledge of longevity", is the oldest and the most comprehensive systems of healing in the world and it has its roots in the philosophy of the ancient Vedas. It is an integral part of yogic psychology, philosophy and practice. The goal of Ayurveda is to restore balance to the body, mind and soul. In Ayurveda, prevention is emphasized. It is easier to treat the disease at its accumulation stage than at the later stages of complication and destruction. In this lecture the underlying theory of Ayurveda will be discussed along with some practical lifestyle and dietary guidelines.AyurvedaThis 16-hour Ayurveda Intensive provides an in-depth exploration of the science of Ayurveda. Topics include Ayurvedic history, Samkhya philosophy, concepts of health and disease in Ayurveda, characteristics of the doshas, Ayurvedic anatomy and physiology, the digestive fire (agni) and toxins (ama), prakruti vs. vikruti, the rhythms of nature and Ayurvedic nutrition.American Sanskrit InstituteThe American Sanskrit Institute was created by Vyaas Houston M.A. in 1989 with a vision of Sanskrit as a universal sacred language. Utilizing learning technology based on the theory and practice of yoga, ASI courses emphasize the ease and joy of learning Sanskrit through an immersion experience, the enjoyment of making the sounds, fluently reading the original Devanagari script, and directly reading, chanting and understanding sacred literature.Koshas: The Five Sheets of the SoulThe Sanskrit word Kosha can be translated as a sheath, a layer or body. The Vedic concept known as The Koshas is a way of understanding the layering of our consciousness from the most obvious and manifest state to the least visible and universal state, we are composed of each of these layers. The Five Koshas are Physical, Energetic, Mental, Wisdom and Spirit. The Koshas are interwoven together like a tapestry. Each one feeds and informs the other. We all feel this interconnection at times. Sometimes we feed ourselves well and sometimes what we are being fed is not so fulfilling. When we feel great joy and inspiration inside it easily flows forth from us physically and when we feel great discomfort physically it can leave us feeling dispirited. All of us have experienced many of the layers in between as when we are struggling with some emotional stress or when we become aware of a deep wisdom or insight. Exploring The Koshas will bring greater understanding of all the dimensions of ourselves beyond just the physically obvious. Yoga itself evolved to deal with all these dimensions of ourselves and our very human experiences. Teaching with ThemesUsing a thematic approach is a great way to keep the yoga practice fresh and interesting. Themes also help the students set an intention so the experience of practice comes from the inside out. This workshop will give teachers ideas and a chance to brainstorm with exercises that foster creativity.Yoga NidraYoga Nidra (yogic sleep) is a practice of deep relaxation of body and mind. With practice, Yoga Nidra becomes a path of meditative inquiry that enhances awareness of many layers and types of resistance so that deep release can be experienced, allowing life to be lived more fully and with greater intention and joy. This workshop, designed for teachers, will explore why and how this ancient art affects the brain. This workshop allows you to experience the technique and learn how to teach it.
